The accretion and tectonic processes of the central 100 km of the Reykjanes Ridge between 58” and 61” N (Fig. 1) were studied in July 1977 by side-scan sonar survey using the long range (30 km) double sided sonar (GLORIA Mk II) and the hull mounted medium range (2.5 km) sonar on RRS “Discovery”. A series of narrow beam echo-sounding sections was made across the central 30 km. Seismic, magnetic and gravity profiles were made simultaneously. This paper is a preliminary account of the principle findings of the cruise as reported in September, 1977, at the IASPEI/IAVCEI meeting in Durham, together with some initial interpretation of the data.
