The locus of initial calcification can be de-fincd as the scalfolding of organic macro-moleculcs which induce and localize mincr-ulization. The microscope—particularly the clectron microscope-yields valuable cvidence in tlıc quest to analyze the propertics and structure of this scaffolding as accurately as possible. Most of the discussion which follows is, therefore, based primarily on ultrastructural findings.'l'hc data so far accumulated havc failcd to still continual skirmishes between a bevy of competing theories. Thc reasons arc not hard to find. Controversy has often led to research focuscul on onc limited sector, whilc'ast ranges of relevant phenomena havc escaped attention; and various technical difficulties involved in preparing mineralized tissues for the clectron microscope have lcd to divergent results.
