METHODSSubjects and anesthetic technique. Eighteen healthy male volunteers, ranging in age from 2 1 to 31 years, were studied. Informed consent was insured by fully explaining the procedures and purposes of the study in a preliminary intcrvicw. Signed consent was obtained at a second interview, when a complete history was taken and a physical examination performed. On the day of the study, fasting subjects who had not smoked for at least 24 hr received 0.6 mg atropine intramuscularly. Anesthesia was induced 30 min later with 2.5 mg/kg of thiopental intravenously, followed by the inhalation of 70% N20-30% Oz. Sufficient d-tubocurarine was administered intravenously in divided doses to maintain paralysis of the respiratory muscles. The average dose required for the entire study was 140 mg (se 6 mg). Following tracheal intubation, ventilation was controlled with a volume-limited Bird respirator with anesthesia attachment. A nonrebreathing circuit utilized the Nargraff head of a &lcKesson anesthesia machine as a mixing valve and a Frumin valve to prevent rebreathing.
