The effects of Li on the circadian activity rhythms of individual and groups of goldfish, Carassius auratus, were examined. Individual control goldfish display stable freerunning circadian activity under constant illumination. When placed in groups of 20 the fish show a social facilitation of their circadian activity with a significantly longer and more stable group circadian period than that shown by individual fish. Chronic treatment with lithium chloride (15 mmol/l) causes a significant, reversible, lengthening of the circadian period of individual fish and elimination of the social facilitation of circadian activity by group formation.
