Natural products have been utilised as an important source of medicines for more than 2000 years. Although at the beginning, active ingredients were isolated mainly from plants, there is now a stronger interest in studying the secondary metabolites of microorganisms. The pivotal role of natural products in the therapeutic areas of cancer and infection is apparent. Sixteen out of the twenty most prescribed groups of antibiotics are derived from natural sources or at least inspired by natural products. A similar trend can be seen for antitumour compounds. For some targets all known and approved drugs stem from natural products. The evolutionary pre-optimisation of natural products to interact with biological targets often serves as one plausible explanation for this observation.
