The difference in electron density between acid and azide methaemoglobin has been determined by X-ray analysis in 3 dimensions at 5.5 A resolution. In both the a - and f) -chains the only significant peaks, obviously representing the azide ions, lie between the iron atom and helix E, at a distance of just over 3 A from the iron atom, exactly as in myo-globin. The azide ions lie deeply buried in the haem pockets which they may not be able to enter without a side-chain swinging out of the way to allow them access.
