AbstractChlorophyll (Chl)cpigments are found in nine Divisions of aquatic chromophyte algae, co-occurring with Chlaand carotenoids in chloroplast thylakoids, and in two Divisions of photosynthetic prokaryotes. Chlscdiffer from Chlsa, banddin being Mg-phytoporphyrins rather than Mg-chlorins. In addition to Chlsc1,c2andc3, many new Chlc-like pigments have recently been isolated and characterized in parallel with advances in separation techniques and spectroscopic methods. Since 1990, the number of known Chlscincreased from seven (Chlsc1,c2,c3, Chl cCS-170, a Chlc2-like pigment fromPavlova gyrans, [DV]-PChlide (i.e. MgDVP) and a nonpolar Chlc-like pigment) to eleven compounds. Novel Chlscinclude [MV]-Chlc3from the haptophyteEmiliania huxleyi, a Chlc1-like pigment from the dinoflagellateKryptoperidinium foliaceumand two Chlc2pigments esterified with monogalactosyl diacylglycerides (MGDG) which have been identified as Chlc2-MGDG (18:4/14:0) fromE. huxleyiand Chlc2-MGDG (14:0/14:0) fromChrysochromulina polylepis, respectively. In addition, one nonpolar Chlc1-like pigment has been isolated fromPrymnesium parvum. Chlc2is the major Chlcpigment found in all Divisions of chromophyte algae, either alone or with significant quantities of Chlsc1and/orc3. Chlcdiversity is highest in the Haptophyta.
