Accepted: 11 January 2002/Published online: 9 March 2002© Springer-Verlag 2002 the Altai region. The purpose of the methodology used for the areas of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the vicinity of the STS was to provide radiation safety for its population because those areas were considered as potentially dangerous for its residents. The methodology was based on radiation measurements made after each test. It was developed jointly by scientists of the Institute of Biophysics and other Institutes of the Ministry of Health in the former USSR, biologists and physicists of the STS, and specialists from other organizations involved in radiation protection. This methodology, which is part of an epidemiological study carried out by the US National Cancer Institute, is currently applied to estimate doses received by subjects living near the STS. At the time of the tests, other areas including the Altai region located relatively far from the STS, were not identified as being potentially dangerous residential locations. Therefore, during the nuclear testing era, those areas were not covered by regular dosimetric observations. It became necessary to assess radiation doses to the population of the Altai region only at the beginning of the 1990s within the compensation framework for the Russian population exposed to radiation. A method for retrospective dosimetry was developed by the specialists of the Central Physico-Technical Institute of the Ministry of Defense (see [4]).
