Our own work has addressed the third problem, that of the origin of the AIDS virus, HIV. The object of these studies, we should make clear, is not to identify a particular site or group of people that harbored a particular an cestral virus and trace a path that led to the AIDS pandemic. Rather, the ob ject is to learn more about viruses related to HIV and so understand how HIV has evolved the unique and deadly properties that lead to AIDS. These questions are of more than historical interest. Within the past three years we and others have iden tified retroviruses related to HIV in monkeys and in human beings.
