Malaria has been a major cause of human suffering for thousands of years, and despite important advances in our understanding of the disease, it continues to be one of the greatest causes of serious illness and death in the world. Ironically, at a time when exciting scientific advances are offering the opportunity to successfully manage many previously untreatable diseases, our ability to reliably treat malaria has actually diminished over the last half-century. At present, a number of antimalarial drugs are available, but their use is limited by high cost, toxicity, and increasing parasite resistance. Thus, there is a great need for the optimal use of available drugs and the development of new approaches to antimalarial chemotherapy.
