Abstract INTRODUCTION THE need for disease-free poultry flocks has increased in recent years. Vaccine manufacturers require fertile eggs that are free of specific viruses, poultry breeders seek to produce breeding stocks that are free of most diseases, and poultry disease research workers require a constant supply of fertile eggs and chicks that are free of disease agents and antibodies. The concept of ventilating with filtered air under positive pressure (FAPP) to isolate disease-free animals from contaminated surroundings was credited to the 19th century German workers, Nuttall and Thierfelder, in a review by Luckey (1963). Luckey also reviewed work by Reyniers and others who developed modern FAPP isolation equipment for laboratories and demonstrated that chickens could be maintained in a disease-free status from hatch through reproduction.
