Although many studies on variability and correlation in crown dimensions have been done[1, 2, 3, 9, 13, 14, 16] there are few reports available on root measurements. Root length has been said to be quite variable individually compared with crown dimensions[8], because the root develops later than the crown, extending to grow into the developing mandible or maxilla which can potentially control the formation and growth of the root. The form of the crown is more genetically determined, but that of the root is much influenced by the physiological circumstances of the alveolar bone during development. However, there are no exact data available on root variability within an individual and among individuals. We present in this paper the results of a basic statistical study of root length and other tooth dimensions, which was considered necessary for an understanding of root length variability and to serve as a basis for further multivariate analysis.
