EUTHANASIA is defined in the Oxford Dictionary as "the bringing about of a gentle and easy death for a person suffering from a painful incurable disease". While some might argue that this definition is too limitedby the inclusion of the word "painful", I believe that all would agree that death for any person with an incurable disease should certainly be "gentle and easy"; and that it is important for us to consider, in public, what can and what cannot be doneor perhaps more constructively, what should and what should not be done to allow or assistour patients to die as gently and as easily as possible with due dignity and humanity.
