P>Cutaneous infections by Zygomycetes may have underestimated clinical consequences. Apophysomyces elegans is a Zygomycete that rarely causes disease in humans. However, it has been reported with increasing frequency in warm climate zones as a result of infection in healthy patients after injury to the cutaneous barrier. The following case report describes a 30-year-old woman with deep tissue involvement of A. elegans associated with a spider bite and a fatal outcome.
