The magnetic and structural properties of the thin-film system Fe Cu(001) were investigated by spin-polarized and conventional appearance-potential spectroscopy. The spin asymmetry of the measured signal provides direct information on the target magnetization and anisotropy with high surface sensitivity. The line shape is sensitive to the crystal structure of the films. The present work demonstrates the direct correlation of magnetism and structure in this puzzling thin-film system by means of a single measurement.
