We discuss the present design for the Keck TMT High Resolution Spectrometer (HIRES). The instrument is a grating cross-dispersed echelle located at the Nasmyth focus. The beam size will be 12″, and the echelle will be a 1x3 mosaic of newly-mastered 46.5 gr/mm 12″ xl6″ R-2.6 echelles, yielding a (resolution × slit width) product of R S = 39000″. Eventually, up to 7 different cross-dispersers will be available, though only a few will be available at first light. Each cross-disperser will be a 2x1 mosaic of 12″ xl6″ gratings. There will be two cameras, a short-focus camera for resolutions up to 50,000 and a long camera for resolutions up to 200,000. With a Tektronix 2048x2048 CCD and the short camera, complete wavelength coverage can be achieved from about 3800-6850A, with a minimum of 5.0″ between orders. With different cross-dispersers, larger order separation with more limited wavelength coverage can also be obtained, for projects requiring accurate sky subtraction or longslit spectroscopy of extended sources. With optical fibers, up to 100 objects can be observed at once in a single echelle order, or 10–20 objects with multiple orders and grating cross dispersion. Scientific and economic factors driving the design are discussed.
