This series of short commentaries will explore the contribution of Peter Adey’s Aerial Life which was published in 2010. The book is a critical thesis on mobility and power which examines the remaking of life in the advent of the aeroplane. It is about what sorts of societies the aeroplane makes possible and denies; what sort of subjects the aeroplane produces, bends to itself and recombines. It is about forms of aerial experience born through multiple and incoherent kinds of spaces, and it is about the politics of all of this e the politics of life itself (Rose, 2006) e brought into being or shut down through an array of techniques, technologies and rationalities of security and war.Firstly, the book argues that aerial mobility is both constituted by and expressed in a set of geographies, infrastructures, relations and processes that connect both land and air. Reconciling the view from above with the view from below, the book develops the notion of an ‘aereality’ea distinctive kind of mobile society ea ‘life on the move’so to speak e which the aeroplane has worked to imagine, define and mould and, at the same time, threatens to destroy. The book contends that the spatialities of the aeroplane are remarkably complex aggregations that are not external from everyday life but are always ‘there with us’; folded following James Sidaway’s (2009: p. 2) claim,‘into the textures of an everyday urban fabric’and into broader logics and economies of security and the state.
