Perched on the edge of a dynamic floodplain, the biophysical environment of Santa Rosa may offer an extreme example of geomorphic and ecological diversity and, hence, more opportunities for diversification than do some other locales. However, great variety and rapid change in resource management, such as occur in Santa Rosa, are fairly characteristic of human groups of any size, in both the present and the past. Throughout the world, women and men-rich and poor, urban, rural, and suburban, and of many different ethnicities-use resources and generate impacts on their environments in significantly different ways. And no group does it exactly as its ancestors did. It is that variability, that “agrodiversity”-even on the minutest scale-that is the stuff of evolutionary change and may be the source of humanity’s best solutions for the future.
