Discovered in 1934, the mutant appears relatively yellow owing to an abnormal amount of bile pigment in its system. Young with the genetic constitution for jaundice, when born to a normal hybrid [female], were normal at birth and became jaundiced in the course of the next 12 hrs. or so. Genotypically jaundiced progeny of jaundiced dams were yellow at birth. Hybrid rats appear normal but 50% of them showed an increased fragility of the erythrocytes and a reticulocytosis. The defect does not respond to splenectomy. New evidence was found for the single gene theory of a syndrome. A 5-generation human pedigree is shown in outline.
