Our principal concern will be with the aperture particle. It encompasses the varied traits of vowel height, laxness (in some languages with a length contrast) and retracted tongue root (in those languages with an opposition of advanced vs. retracted tongue root), and it is the only particle that may occur multiply within a segment.
