A renaissance in light microscopy is manifest in the present series of papers on light imaging in biology and medicine. Naturally, I am honored by this opportunity to herald the opening of the renaissance. I plan to identify some of the innovative accomplishments of recent years and to point out the technological advances that have enabled them. The papers in this part report important progress in several of the most promising new directions.
