Sixty-five 9-year-old children who were very low birthweight (VLBW) (<1500 grams) were compared to 65 full-term children, matched by age, sex, race, and school, on parents' ratings on the Child Behavior Checklist and teachers' ratings on the Teacher's Report Form. Results from parents and teachers converged on key findings: the effect of VLBW on children's behavior problems varied by sex; VLBW boys manifested significantly more psychiatric symptoms and significantly lower social adjustment than matched controls, whereas VLBW girls were indistinguishable from their matched controls. According to both sources, the excess problems in VLBW boys, compared to controls, included emotional distress as well as conduct problems. Additional analysis revealed that the association between VLBW and behavioral disturbance in boys was not a function of IQ.
