Navitracker is a towed density probe for continuous and rapid in situ surveys of the navigable depth in fluid mud areas. This article describes its development by a Belgian dredging contractor and shows how its integration with other hi-tech developments in surveying and maintenance dredging have enabled a giant step forward in maintaining required access channel depths at Belgium's Port of Zeebrugge. Practical examples that include budgets are given to illustrate how the use of Navitracker can generate large savings for port authorities, dredging contractors and shipowners.
