The thermodynamics of chelation of complexes of 2, 2'-bipyridme and pyridine with Mn (II), Ni (II), Cu (II), and Zn (II) were studied by calorimetry and potentiometry. The chelate stabilization for pyridine is of the same order as that for ethylenediamine complexes. The enthalpy and entropy contributions to the chelate effect are analyzed, the former being significant for the Cu (II) and Ni (II) ions. The chelate effect is further divided into cratic and unitary portions. Possi-bilities of using electron spin resonance as a tool in studying complex stabilities are illustrated. Good agreement is ob-tained between esr and traditional measurements.
