The National Atlas of Germany came about in 1990 after the reunification of East and West Germany. An extensive and ambitious multimedia atlas information system was proposed but was not possible due to considerations of cost and timescale (Zentralausschuß fir Deutsche Landeskunde 1991, 1993). In 1995, the Institute of Regional Geography was commissioned to create a revised concept for the national atlas and to be responsible for its realisation.
