Abstract Thermo-reactive deposition (TRD) produces dense coatings of carbides and nitrides within the category of heat treating technology of metals, namely in molten salt baths and in gases from powder packing boxes and fluidizing beds. Thermal diffusion of carbon and nitrogen from the coated substrates results in thick coatings, ensuring that very high strength metallurgical bonds form between coating and substrate. The process has been used since the early 1970s, because it has a number of advantages over chemical vapor deposition and physical vapor deposition, including superior performance, and low investment cost, among others.
