The activities of chymotrypsin, carboxypeptidase A and elastase in pancreas homogenates of water snakes (Natrix tessellata) 24 h after a prey was swallowed were 3 times those of snakes not fed for 1 month. Their activity fell to normal unfed values 2 weeks after feeding. Pattern of values was similar for Vipera palaestinae and V. ammodytes. In the water snake the specific radioactivity of pancreatic proteins 4 h after an intraperitoneal injection of amino acids labelled with 14C at 24 h after feeding was 7 times that of unfed snakes. It is concluded that in snakes which have been starved for long periods the synthesis of digestive enzymes is accelerated after meals.
