Local cerebral blood volume (LCBV), defined as the fraction of brain tissue volume that is composed of blood, is an important functional parameter of cerebrovascular physiology. The distribution of LCBV is heterogeneous and varies between 2% and 4% in most mammals under normocapnic conditions. LCBV is affected by the arterial carbon dioxide partial pressure (P, CO,), varying linearly over large range of P, CO, values. Numerous techniques have been developed to obtain LCBV images in humans and animals using positron emission tomography (PET)(1, 2), single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)(3, 4), dynamic computed tomography (5, 6), and dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)(7, 8). PET and SPECT are quantitative techniques but have low spatial resolution (about zyxwvutsrqpon
