A series of 3 studies was designed and executed to test hypotheses derived from “A Theory of Social Comparison Processes” (Festinger, 1954). A hypothesis tested was that average persons differ from nonaverage (superior and inferior) persons in ability evaluations dependent on social comparison. Specifically, it was predicted that average persons would be more accurate and stable in self-evaluations. Results of all 3 studies strongly support the hypotheses. Ability was manipulated experimentally. Subjects evaluated their performance on a variable-speed pursuit rotor over a series of trials. In 2 separate studies, both inferior and superior subjects were significantly less accurate in evaluating their performance than were average subjects. In one study, superior subjects only were less stable in evaluating performance. In the third study, nonaverage subjects made accurate and stable evaluations, as hypothesized, when permitted adequate social comparison opportunities.
