Antigenic competition and suppression of antibody formation by passive antibody were studied using 2 haptenic determinants (dinitrophenyl (DNP-) and arsenilic (R-Azo-)). Antigenic competition was found to be of the same extent whether the haptens were on the same or on separate carrier molecules. Suppression of active antibody formation to 1 determinant by administration of passive antibody specific for that determinant partially eliminated the depressive effects of antigenic competition when the 2 haptens were on separate carrier molecules; but had no effect on antibody production to the 2nd hapten when the 2 determinants were present on the same molecule. The mechanism by which passive antibody suppresses active antibody formation is by competition of circulating antibody with cells for available antigen. The results are discussed in terms of the mechanisms of suppression, antigenic competition, and control of antibody formation.
