Whether we attribute it to new technologies for manipulating social media, an anti-globalization backlash, or heightened competition for money and power among particular elite actors, authoritarianism in the name of “the people” is proliferating across the world. Brazil, China, the United States, India, the United Kingdom, Hungary, Russia, and Australia are just a few examples from an ever-expanding list. Populist consolidation strategies generate a range of “nobodies”(Rahman 2020) against whom to pitch “somebodies.” Indeed, these groups cannot gather much mileage without demonizing an Other—racialized minorities, migrants, refugees, and religious groups who must be rejected. The nobodies and their supporters—including marginalized communities, students, artists, and women—resist. These dynamics along with pandemic paranoia and emergency measures are a formidable part of the global scenario that confronts many researchers in their fieldwork sites. Fast becoming a colloquialism, phrases such as “We live in uncertain times” are about the only certainty that we can count on.The widespread protests from December 2019 against amendments to the Constitution of India by the rightwing Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are one such scenario. The Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) was passed by the ruling majority BJP, and granted citizenship to persecuted minorities from nearby countries, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, who arrived in India before 2015—but not to those who are Muslims.
