Technological artifacts are increasingly central to the organizing process. Over the past several years, organizational scholars have begun to make strong ontological claims for the mutual constitution of technologies and organizing. The notion of materiality serves as a linchpin connecting the technological artifacts to social outcomes. Yet, we have few methodological approaches for studying materiality. This chapter outlines three cumulative steps for analyzing the role of technological artifacts in organizations. The first step requires an accounting of the materials out of which technological artifacts are fashioned. The second step requires an accounting of the materiality of the object in ways that link materials to the affordances they produce. Finally, the third step requires an accounting for the processes whereby those affordance materialize into practices that shape the action and interaction that constitutes organizing. For each of these steps, I generate a list of questions that analysts must answer when coding their data to be able to uncover the ways in which technological artifacts come to matter for organizing.
