In 2011, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was held in Durban, South Africa. The shared bathrooms in the university residence where I was staying did not supply toilet paper, but a box of free condoms sat on the back of each toilet. In a country marked by AIDS, the issues of health, poverty, environmental vulnerability and community resilience are inextricably linked with any ability to respond to climate change. And yet, I was unsurprised, then or now, that the international negotiators with whom the reporter was speaking were unable to make this connection. We can only see what we have developed the capacity to see.
