1.1 TUNEL-positive apoptotic nuclei could be detected per highpower field (HPF). At day 4 of GCV treatment this number was significantly higher (8.1±1.7 per HPF, P< 0.05), ignoring regions consisting of only apoptotic cells (Fig. 1d and e), demonstrating widespread apoptosis2. By day 8 tissue became less cellular, containing scattered tumor cells and macrophages, as well as scar-forming astroglial cells (Fig. 1f and g). Transmission electron microscopy sections of tumors were characterized by apoptotic bodies and an elevated number of lipid droplets (diameter 0.2–2.0 µm) within tumor cells at day 4 (43±5 versus 23±3 per field in untreated tumors, P< 0.05). A significantly higher proportion of these droplets was densely osmiophilic, indicating polyunsaturation (Fig. 2c) on day 4 (37±3% vs. 19±8% in untreated, P< 0.05).
