SummaryL-DOPA and acidic amino acids, when applied in the bathing fluid, produced swimming activities in isolated myotome-spinal cord preparations of small adult lampreys (Ichthyomyzon unicuspis). Undulatory movements of the body, antiphasic bursts of spikes in contralateral myotomal segments, and the fraction of the cycle period occupied by the bursts were identical to those of swimming behavior in intact animals. In isolated preparations myotomal activities also exhibited rostro-caudal phase lag.The excitatory action of L-DOPA was not altered after treatment of the preparations with drugs which inhibit the synthesis or breakdown of dopamine and noradrenaline, nor did the catecholamines themselves excite swimming activity. Glutamic acid diethyl ester antagonized competitively the excitatory actions both of L-DOPA and of the acidic amino acids.Strychnine, high K+, and low Ca++ produced general excitation in the spinal cord but not swimming activities. It is concluded that L-DOPA excites neurons in the lamprey spinal cord by an action similar to that of acidic amino acids.
