Abstract Alarms are used in industrial plants to notify operators about any abnormality or fault in the process. In practice, however, a majority of alarms are false or nuisance alarms and only distract the operator from normal operation of the process. Filtering of process data, adding alarm delay and using alarm deadband are simple techniques that if utilized properly can reduce the false and nuisance alarm rate significantly. In this paper we investigate the effect of these three techniques on accuracy of the alarm system and detection delay. We also propose a framework for designing optimal filter, time delay and deadband to reduce false and missed alarm rates.
