Antigenic relationships among members of the Myxovirus group were studied by means of complement-fixation, virus neutralization and haemagglutination-inhibition tests. The viruses investigated included influenza A, B and C, Sendai, haemadsorption (HA) viruses types 1 and 2, croup-associated (CA) virus, mumps and Newcastle disease (NDV). No antigenic relation could be demonstrated between influenza A, B or C and the remaining Myxoviruses included in this study. Complement-fixation tests performed with pooled guineapig antisera failed to show cross reactions, except in the case of Sendai and HA2viruses. Cross-reactions between these 2 viruses were not entirely reciprocal, and were particularly marked in tests performed with Sendai antiserum suggesting that an antigen common to these 2 viruses is present in higher concentration in Sendai than in HA., virus. An antigenic relationship between Sendai and HA3virus was also demonstrated, but to a lower extent, by complement-fixation tests with viral antigens, by haem-agglutination-inhibition and by serum neutralization. Sendai and HA2viruses are considered to be sub-types of the same virus type. Low levels of cross reactions between Sendai, mumps, CA, HA and NDV were revealed in complement-fixation tests done with antisera from individual guineapigs or with human convalescent sera. The present findings support the recently proposed classification of Myxoviruses [ANDREWESet al., thisBulletin, 1959, v. 34, 1056] in which the new members of the group are gathered under the nameMyxovirus parainfluenzaewith 3 subgroups consisting ofM. para-influenzae1 (Sendai and HA,),M. paraïnfluenzae2 (CA) andM. paraïnfluenzae3 (HA1)H.
