The solubility and diffusion coefficients of O2 and CO2 were measured in the pure and emulsified of 2 fluorocarbons, perfluorotributylamine and perfluorobutyl perfluorotetrahydrofuran. The solubility coefficient and the diffusivity of O2 in the pure form of the fluorocarbons decreased with decreasing partial pressure of O2 (PO2), but the solubility coefficient and the diffusivity of CO2 were independent of its partial pressure. The solubility and diffusion of O2 in the emulsified form of the fluorocarbons followed the pattern expected from the behavior of O2 in the pure fluorocarbon. A physical and/or chemical interaction probably exists between O2 and the fluorocarbons; this interaction is more pronounced at partial pressures below 150 mm Hg. Comparisons of the O2 content in the fluorocarbon emulsions with that in whole blood show that PO2 of 760 mm Hg, the O2 content in the fluorocarbon emulsions is approximately 1/2 that in whole blood, but at PO2 of 50-150 mm Hg, the O2 content in the emulsions decreases to values which are less than 1/10 that of whole blood.
