Objective: To assess the relative validity of consumption data for fatty acids (FAs) measured using a short food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) in comparison with those obtained by analysis of plasma FA levels. Design: In this cross-sectional study, completed FFQs were obtained from 177 middle-aged adults (92 men and 85 women) in Japan during August 2001. FA intake was assessed using the FFQ, and the values were validated against fasting plasma FA levels. Results: The meanSD daily intake of total fatty acids (TFAs) was 44.48.0 g/day for men, and 42.97.2 g/day for women. The mean plasma TFA level was 12.733.78 mmol/litre for men, and 10.541.75 mmol/litre for women.
