During the last 30 years or so membranes and membrane processes have developed from a laboratory tool to an industrial process of important technical and commercial significance. Nevertheless, the potential of membranes and membrane processes for the separation of molecular mixtures has been recognized more then 150 years ago when Pfeffer studied the osmotic phenomena and Graham discovered that rubber exhibits different permeabilities to different gases.
