Abstract The task for measurement of simple reaction time was to respond to an auditory signal by giving a maximal contraction of the hand-gripping muscles. Each test was preceded by a preparatory submaximal muscular contraction during the foreperiod, accomplished by having the 41 subjects voluntarily grip the dynamometer to the specified values of 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 kg. In addition, a control group was employed which involved no preliminary muscular tension. A significant improvement in reaction time was found among conditions (F=12.6), but the differences were entirely between control and 10-kg pre-tension, both of which were slower than all other conditions; beyond 15 kg, no significant differences existed. This supports the concept that increased muscular tension, in the form of preparatory set, results in faster reaction time.
