There is comparatively little known concerning the supporting tissue (neuroglia) of the central nervous system of insects. Only a few investigations of the Spanish school (Cajal and SBnchez, ’15; SBnchez y Sdnchez, ’35) deal more extensively with the problem mainly on the basis of Golgi preparations and with the following results : 1. In contrast to Haller’s description ( ’05) of a (syncytial) ‘Neuroglianetz,’ the glia in the insects’ ganglia consists of independent cell elements. 2. Besides an epithelial glia (corresponding to the ependyma) there exists a genuine neuroglia which can be compared with the astrocytes of the vertebrates. I n general, however, one finds in papers dealing with the central nervous system of different groups of insects only a few occasional statements concerning the supporting tissue. In the majority of these studies there is no uniformity as to the nomenclature used for the non-nervous constituents of the central nervous system. Particularly a clear differentiation between neuroglia proper on one hand and connective tissue elements on the other is generally lacking. In some papers (for instance Nelson, ’24) we encounter the terms ‘outer iieurilemma’ for the sheath surrounding the ganglia and
