A description is given of the courtship of this viviparous cyprinodontid fish, and an ethological analysis is attempted of the behavior of the male during these performances. Several courting activities are distinguished. Courtship consists of 2 phases: a preliminary one in which the male acts as if he were trying to lead the female away from a concentration of guppies; and a more advanced stage, including the same activities with other taxis components and ending in a copulation attempt. By making genital smears real copulation attempts could be distinguished from mere gonopodial contacts. Though the marking pattern varies considerably in different males, during courtship all males take on the same patterns of black markings. Six different group of markings are distinguished that occur in various combinations during courtship. Quantitative studies of their occurrence show that some of these patterns always go together, others never, while several patterns are frequently combined. Study of the correlation between the presence of definite marking patterns and definite behaviors strongly suggests that the marking patterns are indicative for specific internal factors or combinations of such factors. The fact that definite marking patterns correspond with different degrees of readiness to perform sexual behavior makes possible quantitative study of the combined effect of internal and external stimulation of different intensities on the character of the response, with the marking pattern taken as a measure of the internal stimulation and the size of the male as a measure of the external stimulus. The same response clearly can be caused by different combinations of internal and external stimulation; the kind and the intensity of the response depends only on the total amount of stimulation irrespective of its origin. A preliminary attempt is made to explain the form of the courtship as the result of interactions of the sexual, the agressive and the fleeing instincts. On the basis of the analysis undertaken some theoretical remarks are made on the concepts of hierarchy, ritualization, appetitive behavior and consummatory act. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: G. P. Baerends
