By AH CHISHOLM, London. When I was about to leave Australia in April on a visit to Britain, it was suggested that an effort be made to discover material relating to John Gould, for use in respect of the centenary of his arrival in Australia. The effort was made through a letter to the Times, and it proved unexpectedly fruitful. Information furnished by correspondents was of no!: ipecial account, but the letter brought me into touch with Gould's sole grandchild, Mrs. Edelsten, and, through her, with her two som, Dr. Geoffrey and Dr. Alan Erleh; tcn, and between them a"\Vealth of interesting material was provided. It was a singular experience to sit in a village in Hampshire, and later in a village in Somerset, and uncover documents relating to Australia of 100 years ago. Incidentall~'it was curious to find that the Hampshire great-grandson of Gould lives only a few miles from the home of Gregory Mathews (they do not know each other), and that the Somerset great-grandson, although born in London, lives only a few miles from Gould's birthplace, Lyme Regis, in Dorset.
