Aspects of the interaction between oilseed Brassica spp. and Leptosphaeria maculans are reviewed primarily as they relate to the development of resistant cultivars. A brief description of the four oilseed Brassica spp. and an outline of their taxonomic relationships is presented. A description of methods for evaluation of interaction phenotypes of blackleg on crucifers is followed by evaluation of germplasm for resistance to blackleg. The inheritance of resistance in Brassica species is presented followed by information on the interspecific transfer of resistance using conventional methods. Evidence for physiological specialisation in L. maculans and the genetics of virulence of this fungus on B. napus are discussed.
