Pigeons'' key-pecking was maintained on three-component multiple schedules. In one component a tandem variable-interval fixed-ratio 10 schedule maintained high response rates. In the second component a tandem variable-interval differential-reinforcement-of-low-rate 5-s schedule maintained lower response rates. These components alternated at 15-, 30-, or 45-s intervals with a 15-s period of darkness (blackout) in the chamber. Response-independent food presentations, added during the blackout according to variable-time 15-, 30-, or 150-s schedules, yielded differential resistance to change in the two components. With more frequent response-independent food presentations, responding in the high-rate component was reduced more, that is, was less resistant to change, than that in the low rate component. The effects are more logically attributed to the interaction between the response-independent food delivery in the blackout and prevailing contingencies on responding than to response rates per se. The relation of these data to the study of response-independent reinforcement also is discussed.
