Maceral fractions derived from density separations of six coals were extracted at room temperature in carbon disulfide/N-methylpyrrolidone based media. Vitrinite was found to have the highest extract yield. Both liptinites and inertinites exhibited lower extractability. In addition, differences in extractability were found within individual fractions of the same maceral group, such as the vitrinite group. The results show that extraction of vitrinite can be a heterogeneous process where certain submaceral vitrinite particles extract differently. This may have implications for experiments that rely on extracts or residues from extractions to determine the nature of the original coal structure.
