Aiming at the vibration of virtual lathe's cutting operations, an experiment was done that the vibration responder on lathe could be working by shock excitation. Based on experimental results, the cutting vibrations thus causes are decomposed into three parts, i.e. the random and forced vibrations and the regenerated chatter, and each of them is modeled. The effect of spindle rotation on the amplitude responses of forced vibration is analyzed. The models developed are applied to NC simulation of cutting vibration process to predict more reliably the physical process of metal working by lathes, so as to improve the applicability of the virtual cutting software.Compared the results from simulation and from experimentation for chattering process, the program developed can be regarded as reliable.
