Treatment of malignant esophagorespiratory fistulas with covered stents

ResultsStents were successfully placed in all 15 patients. No immediate procedural complications occurred. Esophagography performed 24 h after insertion confirmed good coverage of the fistulous tract in 93% of cases. Symptoms of aspiration and dysphagia were relieved in 14 of 15 patients. One patient with a persistent leak around the stent continued with symptoms of aspiration and died 18 days later from pulmonary sepsis. Follow-up was done in 15 patients. Median follow-up was 218 days (range 13–313 days). Twelve patients died (average survival 148 days) and three were alive at the end of the study.
