During 2009, several foci of heathlands dominated by E. umbellata showed decline and mortality in the Villuercas Mountains, a protected natural area in eastern Extremadura (southwestern Spain). A total area of 10 ha was affected. During spring 2011, roots and rhizosphere soil samples from E. umbellata plants exhibiting dieback and mortality were collected. Based on morphological and cultural characteristics, sequence analysis of the ITS and pathogenicity tests, the causal agent was identified as P. cinnamomi. This is thought to be the first report of E. umbellata as a natural host of P. cinnamomi.
